Day 2 – explore floodplains of skadar lake
Enjoy your breakfast accompanied by song of birds with a view over the surrounding mountains on “Hoopoe’s terrace”.
After the breakfast we drive towards Žabljak Crnojevića and discover the north western part of Lake Skadar National Park. First we walk (4km) over the floodplains, a stunning landscape and habitat for many species of bird like Bee-eater, Hobby, Hoopoe, Short-toed Eagle, different Warblers, Calandra Lark. After a short break and for the enthusiast a swim in the river we start heading back to the starting point by boat. We discover River Karatuna and Malo Blato – a lake connected to Skadar Lake. There is a great possibility to see many of the water and wetland birds (recorded over 180 species) like Kingfisher, Pygmy Cormorant, most of the heron species, Marsh Harrier. In the village we will enjoy our lunch at a local restaurant. Before driving back to the glamping we take a short hike up to the castle and enjoy the stunning view over this part of the lake.
DAY 3 – ULCINJ SALINE
After an early breakfast we head to Ulcinj Saline. The Salina covers fifteen square kilometers, and its territory occupies the southernmost part of Montenegro. It is one of the most important ornithological sites in the Adriatic Sea, an internationally important area as a bird habitat. So far, 241 bird species have been registered in this area, half of the total number of birds in Europe. Many of them use this place for nesting, while for migrating birds, this is a unique resting place during spring and autumn migrations. The unusual landscape and scenes of various flocks and individual specimens of birds will perhaps make this day the most memorable of all during your bird week. The walk along the pools’ barriers will be interrupted countless times to observe the beauties like Dalmatian Pelican, Black-tailed Godwit, Black-winged Stilt, Flamingo, European Roller, Collared Pratincole and several duck species.
DAY 4 – rivers, floodplains and the lake
In the morning we head out on the lake by boat. This will be a very exciting day as we will not only see a whole array of birds but cruising over the mirrored waters with mountains all around will leave you with a very unique feeling. After discovering the Moraca delta and Manastirska tapija we head along the north eastern part of the lake. We bring a visit to Europe’s most westerly colony of Dalmatian Pelicans. This day on the lake will certainly bring big flocks of Pygmy Cormorants, different duck species, different heron species (Night Heron, Purple heron, Squacco Heron, Little Bittern, Cattle Egret) and many other water birds. Packed lunch in the best spot to enjoy silence and surroundings guaranteed.
DAY 5 – day off or…
Enjoy a relaxed day in your base. Enjoy the swimming pool, relax and unwind or discover other places in Montenegro. ..
If you have some target birds, we can organise a special, private birding day for you! (We know where exact species of birds are nesting to bring you directly to our quiet, watching spot).
DAY 6 – Cemovsko polje and Cijevna canyon
After breakfast we go and explore the birding areas around Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro.
First we visit Cemovsko Polje, the largest plain in Montenegro. Here we can find different smaller habitats close to allepo pines, steppe vegetation, fruit and grape plantations. The area is good to spot different types of Lark, bee-eaters, Stone-Curlew, Hoopoe, birds of prey (Red-footed Falcon, Sparrowhawk, Hobby)
After visiting the plain we go and explore a completely different environment. The Cijevna canyon rises up more than 1300 meter. The steep rock faces make it a good breeding area for different birds of prey like Vultures, Short-toed Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk.
Other birds like Night Jar, Dipper and Golden Eagle can be seen in the canyon.
Lunch break in great spot along the Cijevna river.
DAY 7 – Southern shore
Last day we head out to explore the southern shore of Skadar Lake. The road winding through the hills is absolutely stunning and will reveal many breath taking views. This rocky landscape brings a different variety of birds (Rock and Cirl Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Partridge, Black Eared Wheatear, Western Rock Nuthatch). Along the way we visit Donji Murići, a village on the lake shore with the biggest and most beautiful beach on the lake. After enjoying the peacefulness of the beach and surroundings we drive back up towards an ancient chestnut forest. From here we take a small walk through the woods towards a forgotten mountain village and have lunch at a local homestead. The surroundings here are magnificent and birds like Wryneck, Flycatchers, Eastern Subalpine Warbler, and different types of Wheatears are common to see.
DAY 7 – DEPARTURE
Enjoy last, late heavenly breakfast and prepare yourself to check-out.
There is possibility to book an extension of the birding holiday with 3 days in northern Montenegro (get in touch to plan your next step).
